Patio and Outdoor Kitchen, Cambridge

Project Overview

This was a great build for lovely people but will always be remembered for the huge commercial grade pizza oven and covid. The clients had a very good idea of what they wanted from the outset which made the design process fairly simple.

They wanted to extend the existing patio and create a large dining area under a pergola with festoon lighting. They also wanted a pizza oven with a basic kitchen and work surfaces. The garden wrapped around the house and the side areas were for plants and lawns.

Groundworks

First task was to dig out and put in bases for the paving and level the lawn areas. We created terraces for the lawns and large planters along the back of the garden using sleepers to create the shape but keep a natural feel.

The next part of the job was to tidy up and leave site for 6 weeks as covid hit, a very surreal moment as we drove off site to lockdown with the rest of the country.

We returned to site to learn that the kids wanted to leave the garden as it was because over the 6 weeks the piles of bulk bags and sand with the dug-up site had made the best playground. Mum and dad were not quite as keen, so we cracked on.

Pergola and Outdoor Kitchen

The pergola was constructed with chunky 150×150 posts and 200×50 joists all painted black to give a modern simple look. The paving was a permeable slab supplied by Tobermore to match the existing patio. This was laid on a permeable granite subbase more like a driveway than a patio.

We constructed the kitchen area from sleepers then topped with oversized black granite to create an area to make pizzas with a breakfast bar style seating edge.

Pizza Oven

Next we constructed the pizza oven supplied by Gozney and it was quite a build, so many nuts and bolts and so much insulation, the outside is rendered with a special render to further retain heat.

It got up to over 600 degrees and was so well insulated when you stopped cooking at night it was still hot enough in the morning to cook breakfast on!

Lawn and Planting

With the main area done we shaped and laid the circular lawns and installed the beautiful round corten steel water feature.

The electrics on this job consisted of power to the water feature for pump and sockets at the pizza kitchen area for fridge and speakers. There was festoon lighting over the pergola and spotlights in the planted beds.

Garden Gym

We also build garden gyms for kids and adults and the customer saw some of them and asked us to build a small one for the kids as a trade-off for ruining their covid playground, so we squeezed one in complete with tyre swing, gym rings, monkey bars and a climbing wall.

Now all the hard work was done the only thing left to do was try out the pizza oven, so the clients kindly made us all some of the best pizza I’ve ever eaten washed down with a cold beer, perfect end to the project.
